Celebrate the National Year of Reading Seminar
Held on Thursday 31st January 2008

Renaissance Learning were proud to sponsor and accommodate a Celebration of the National Year of Reading held at our head offices in the Docklands, London. The event was a tremendous success with 70 attendees from various schools and educational authorities covering the South East of England and Greater London.

Over 160 people replied to the initial offer to attend this fantastic event ranging from Head Teachers to Librarians and Education Authority Advisers and with only 70 seats available, a second date of 28th February 2008 has had to be hastily arranged.

The seminar started with a welcome and introduction from James Bell, Director of Professional Services and was then followed by a very inspirational and informative session by Jonathan Douglas, National Literacy Trust (the charity responsible for running the National Year of Reading).

Beverley Humphrey from Woolwich Polytechnic in London spoke of her own experience in setting up a whole boys school reading project using Accelerated Reader.

Presentations were also made by Paola Riddle, Head Teacher at Brentfield Primary School who celebrated their achievements in getting children to read from very diverse and often deprived backgrounds. Also there to present and share ideas were Kathy Heaps, Literacy Research Co-ordinator from the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust and Dr Allen Thurston from Dundee University who specialises in paired reading. The day was rounded off by Alison Judge and Nikki Marsh of the charity BookTrust who informed us about their book gifting activities and involvement in children's book awards and presented a session on how to support schools through the National Year of Reading.

The seminar finished at 3.00pm which gave attendees a chance to chat over a glass of wine before everyone departed for home. Everyone walked away with some fabulous new ideas!

From the feedback received so far, the day was rated as being outstanding.
