Reading tests 'should be given to every 11-year old entering secondary school'

Sir Cyril Taylor GBE speaking at the RSA Risk Commission Conference on October 31st recommends a 6-point blueprint to increase reading levels amongst children in the UK and makes a controversial recommendation for mandatory reading tests for all 11-year olds entering secondary school.

On-Line Literacy Solution

A computer program aimed at raising literacy levels in individual schools is to be made available on the Internet. The move means that performances by individual pupils and teachers will now be open to password-access by LEAs. But Renaissance Learning UK, creator of the program - Renaissance Place - claims teachers need not fear a 'Big Brother' effect.
